Remember the stores we loved as kids? The kind of store where one goes in and the owner remembers your name or even your dog’s name? Well, those stores still exist! Daminger’s Natural Pet Foods not only has amazing pet food, but the small town friendly demeanor we all know and often miss.
Daminger’s Natural Pet Foods was first opened in 1929 by Ken Daminger’s grandfather. Now the store is co-owned by Ken Daminger and Tom Mariner. Daminger’s has an assortment of healthy, wholesome, and organic foods your pets will love. It may be shocking to hear but not all pet foods are created equal. “Most grocery or regular foods are grain based as opposed to meat based and 60 – 65 percent of dogs are allergic to grain. So we decided to eliminate it all together,” said Ken Daminger.
Many do not realize or know to be concerned about the foods their animals are eating. Thankfully, Daminger’s Pet Food is here to help! “The foods sold here do not use ‘rendered’ meats and oils. The oil used in other products is often old grease from restaurants. Also, when you read ‘meat bi-product’ as an ingredient, it can be anything . . . road kill . . . the entire animal ground up . . . it’s unbelievable,” he adds.
One may read the words ‘organic’ or ‘natural’ and respond with words such as “expensive,” or “unnecessary.” Truth be told, at Daminger’s, some foods are a little pricey; however, they offer better foods at a lower price, too. Not everything is expensive.
“I’ve been buying my pet food at Daminger’s for over 10 years,” one customer remarked. “I can buy a bag of great food for $10 and know it’s quality food. Better than going to a grocery store and spending the same amount of money on junk food for my dog. I found buying my pet food here was both saving me money and helpful to me personally as the employees are nice . . . and they know their stuff, which is rare anymore!”
As the proud owner of a Shih Tzu, Ken prides himself on making his customers feel welcome. “I think keeping it personal is important” he explains.
It doesn’t take long for a customer of Daminger’s to open up with a personal story concerning the store and its employees. “I’ve been a customer for about 12 years. My cat became very ill with kidney failure and thyroid issues. The manager here helped me with a bland diet for her. Every time we came in, he’d ask, ‘How’s Starlight doing with her kidneys?’ He’d ask about her by name and her condition; it was nice to be remembered. She died at 20 years old and we thank them for their help as well as her Vet, of course. Now we come here for our other pets foods. Only here,” the customer added with a smile.
It’s businesses like this one that deserve to stay open for business. Daminger’s Natural Pet Foods is located in Mantua and also offers other pet supplies at great prices; including items to add to one’s garden.
For Daminger’s and its customers, life is where the heart is: your family, your pets, your world.
